Position: Director of Human Resources

Reports to: Vice President

 

Job Summary

The Director of Human Resources is responsible for developing and implementing Thread’s talent strategy including talent acquisition, workforce development, employee engagement, and organizational risk management. Managing a team of two to three coordinators, the Director provides overarching human resources support to the broader Thread Community of staff, AmeriCorps members, volunteers, collaborators, and students. Through building authentic relationships and having a deep understanding of core organizational needs, the Director conducts skills gap analysis, ensures staff and volunteer teams are working smart, and plans and executes volunteer and employee performance evaluations. Additionally, the Director works collaboratively with the VP and CEO to manage for organizational growth and is the lead on ensuring Thread meets or exceeds all Human Resources risk management and compliance needs, including policy development and background checks. The Director will actively work toward full realization of Thread’s talent vision of having a 100% high-performing and happy staff team.


 

Key Responsibilities

Risk Management

  • Manage Human Resources information systems and HR compliance plus legal issues as needed
  • Establish and maintain organizational records and reports plus organizational charts, employee directory, employee handbooks, crisis management policies, student files, and beyond
  • Oversee compliance with employment law, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) regulations, as well as compliance with policies and procedures required by Thread’s key partners, etc
  • Lead and steward Thread’s comprehensive approach to ensuring the safety of all members of the Thread community, with a particular focus on child safety and crisis management
  • Counsel and advise staff on a wide variety of sensitive personnel issues (e.g. discipline, hiring, performance improvement, promotions, return to work, and beyond) for the purpose of assisting in effective decision making and enforcing all relevant policies, procedures, and regulations
  • Work directly with consultants and outside counsel regarding employment-related issues in a timely and effective manner
  • Oversee benefits inquiries, status changes, payroll inquiries, exit interviews, and the employment termination processes

Talent Acquisition

  • Identify and recruit appropriate candidates or Thread staff and internship positions
  • Develop, refine and document recruiting strategies; identify challenges to recruiting in partnership with the VP and adjust approaches as needed
  • Lead the execution of the recruitment strategies and manage the entire arc of the recruitment process
  • Ensure quality of application processing/enrollment process for staff and interns
  • Collect and manage data related to staff recruitment
  • Ensure that Thread simultaneously 1) offers a healthy environment and competitive and attractive package to staff members who the organization would like to retain 2) practices a clear and effective process for identifying staff members who will not be retained, and manages attrition in a way that maintains relationships and 3) protects and fosters the overall team culture in the process

Organizational Development

  • Overall staffing plan, identification of needs, gaps and call for positions comes from the Director of HR
  • Work with VP and Executive Team to create organizational charts and define each position’s responsibilities
  • Discuss career-pathing options with high-potential employees and their team leaders
  • Work closely with Executive Team to research, develop, and deploy presentations, discussion documents and other communication tools for use in facilitating connections between all parts of the Thread Community
  • Determining Thread’s overall HR strategy, i.e. 100% Happy and High-Performing Team, “no-rug” environment, a feedback culture, calling a thing-a-thing, etc
  • Develop the strategy regarding approach to ongoing changes

Coaching and Professional Development

  • Directly manage two or more employees and act as their coach, ensuring continual learning and development as well as progress toward hitting key metrics
  • Develop and actively participate in feedback and feed-forward loops designed to encourage team members to actively, openly, honestly, productively and positively contribute to their own development, the development of the Thread team, and realization of the Thread mission and vision

Performance Evaluation and Retention Programs

  • Develop and maintain competitive total compensation plan (parental leave, health benefits, 403b, wellness fund, PTO, salary, and beyond), ensuring Thread’s benefits package and strategies are comprehensive and support the retention of high performing staff
  • Plan regular employee and volunteer performance evaluations
  • Conduct skills gap analyses
  • Develop employee retention programs and coordinate team-building activities
  • Craft policies that support internal promotions
  • Perform benchmark research on compensation and benefits
  • Support with the interpretation of data and use results to improve processes over time
  • Act as a steward of Thread’s culture and ensure alignment between the work environment and Thread’s organizational values

 

Qualifications/Skills

  • A minimum of 7-10 years of proven work experience as a Director of Talent, Director of Human Resources or similar role
  • Familiarity with performance management and relevant software
  • Knowledge of labor legislation human resource laws and best practices
  • Hands-on experience with Human Resources tools
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills plus attention to detail and high regard for compliance
  • Demonstrated ability to work in complex environment and manage multiple processes and tasks simultaneously
  • Fully developed sense of urgency and impeccable ability for follow-through
  • Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, Thread’s mission and vision
  • Prior non-profit experience or knowledge preferred
  • Proficiency with technology (e.g. Microsoft Office, including Excel) and willingness to adapt to new technology
  • BSc/MSc in Human Resources or relevant field
  • Additional certification (e.g. CIPD, SPHR, SHRM) is a plus
  • High level of discretion and judgment; able to handle highly sensitive and confidential information
  • Exceptional leadership development and team-building skills
